I must be in a writing mood today... I need to chill so I don't run out of ideas for content but I suppose more will come. And I would write them and save them but I get excited to publish when I write so I probably won't wait. Anyhow, I have been wanting to start doing Profiles on local folks that standout in our community and one such person is Danny Toschlog the owner and proprietor of The Bar off the expressway in Brownsville near The Boot Jack. 

I have been acquainted with Danny since about 2008. I don't believe he would remember this but I met him when he was first building out his bar. I was calling on a client in the complex and accidentally opened the door to his bar. He greeted me with a warm smile and informed me he was building an Irish Style Pub in the location. I remember thinking look at this white guy building an Irish Pub next to a huge Tejano Bar in Brownsville... I thought good luck with that but truly wished him well and went about my way.

A year or two later I keep hearing about this great new bar for the 20 something crowd. So me being in my 20s.... right. I decided to go check it out. Low and behold it was The Bar. He had a packed house and I was happy to see his success. Over the next few years by sheer will and stubbornness Danny grew his business to the point an expansion was absolutely necessary. On his busy nights you couldn't even walk in the place. In his true maverick fashion Danny went about renovating and expanding the facility on his own. He bootstrapped the funds and did most of the work himself and re-purposed used items and materials to create an amazing bar. John Taffer is a bar master but when it comes to getting your own hands dirty I think Danny can hold his own. He transformed his hole in the wall bar to a really nice much bigger establishment that had the appearance of being there for years.

As is always the case Danny has not been without his detractors. Let's be honest when you run a successful business in this town especially a night club, you will get some haters. He has had people try to sabotage his business and take issue with his parenting and his personality. And yes he can be an unapologetic bad ass at times. He says what he thinks and does as he pleases. But he cares deeply for his daughter and the people he considers close friends. I guarantee his friends and close acquaintances have no doubt where his loyalties lie. He has always been respectful to me and supportive of my initiatives and I him. I know he will continue to succeed at whatever he does... I hear whispers of a new venture afoot. I can't wait to see what this hard as nails, creative entrepreneur does next. Best believe I will Be part of it!
