A few years ago Commissioner Rose Gowen started an initiative known as Cyclobia Brownsville to get people more active. The event is loosely based on similar events in other countries but has it's own Brownsville flair. It is typically hosted in downtown Brownsville. Although the event is not about focusing attention on downtown Brownsville it is a positive side effect as people are able to enjoy the sites and sounds of our historic downtown without auto traffic. The event is free to the community and multiple activities are set up throughout the course. I believe they even lend out bikes if you don't have one. The city has held the event consistently for about 3 years and participation has grown every time it occurs. I think even given the heat tonight there will be a strong turnout.

I haven't been in a couple of years due to scheduling conflicts but I do consistently promote and support it. I am excited because tonight I have my boys with me and we have no conflicting plans so we will be there! I will try to take some pics and video for an upcoming blog post. Even if you don't have a bike come and check it out. You will see people you know and possibly make new friends and connections. (Photo - Brownsville Herald)
Although it's a great community event it's not without it's detractors and even I have concerns about the cost to the tax payers. But overall I support the initiative and applaud all involved for making an effort to create healthy activities and promote an active outdoor lifestyle in Brownsville. I have thoroughly enjoyed each event and I know you will to. For more information click on the following links and Be part of it.
See y'all there!
